INTRODUCTION
DRIV_MAN is a disk utility management tool that displays pertinent logical disk
drive data - up to twenty-six drives - on a SINGLE SCREEN for analysis/storage.
It's great for use with multi-drive systems, networks, and large systems! The
DRIV_MAN display includes: DRIVE DATA SUMMARY with capacity, used and free for
each available/selected drive, DRIVE DATA GRAPH with the same data for each
drive, TOTAL DISK SUMMARY and GRAPH, and INDIVIDUAL DRIVE DATA displaying full
information on one drive at a time.
Program options include: Toggle the sort order for the DRIVE DATA SUMMARY and
GRAPH from six selections, selectable/editable display DRIVE RANGE, disk storage
of the DISK DRIVE SUMMARY display, auto run, and the ability to run a file man-
ager, FILE_MAN, from within the program.
Major Features
* SINGLE SCREEN data display of all selected/available disk drives.
* Display SECTIONS include:
- DRIVE DATA SUMMARY for all selected/available disk drives - A to Z - with
capacity(Mb), used amount(Mb/Kb)/percent and free amount(Mb/Kb).
- DRIVE DATA GRAPH with a column(Mb/Kb or %) for each drive depicting capac-
ity, used and free.
- TOTAL DISK SUMMARY(bytes) with capacity, used amount/percent, and free
amount/percent.
- TOTAL DISK GRAPH with used percent and free percent.
- INDIVIDUAL DRIVE DATA(bytes) of capacity, used amount/percent, and free
amount/percent. Drives may be scrolled through the full range of select-
ed/available.
* Display DRIVE DATA SUMMARY/GRAPH in any of six sorted orders.
* Selectable disk DRIVE RANGE - command line or data entry menu.
* Detects monitor type and sets colors accordingly.
* Display colors are coordinated to highlight the various types of data.
* Display data may be stored/appended to a disk file for archiving, later com-
parison, etc.
* May be run in automatic mode, such as in a batch file that runs as the first
job of the day, to display and save the drive data.
* FILE_MAN, a file manager shareware utility, may be run directly from
DRIV_MAN.
* Display additional allocation information for each drive.
* Context sensitive help is available for all actions.
* Mouse support.
* Registered users may suppress the shareware registration reminder message
displays and receive a printed/bound manual along with the ability set/change
the display colors and position the various display sections using a configu-
ration file..
System Requirements
IBM PC, XT, AT or true compatibles operating with PC/MS-DOS, version 3.0 or
later. It supports both NETBIOS networks and "huge" hard disk drives formatted
for more than 32MB. The program will determine what type of display monitor is
available and adjust itself accordingly.

INTRODUCTION DRIV_MAN Version 1.3
Manual Format
This manual is divided into several introductory chapters followed by chapters
for operating DRIV_MAN. The format of these chapters and the information pre-
sented therein has been standardized using the following conventions.
Page layout - Each page has a header detailing the chapter and the program ver-
sion covered. A footer displays the manual page number.
Brackets and parentheses - Brackets, [...], are used in the manual and in the
help screens to specify what should be entered in response to the current
prompt. If a character string is to be entered, the type of character is noted,
such as ALPHA, NUMERIC, ANY, etc. Parentheses, (..), are used for comments.
Computer key conventions - Keys specified in the manual text that are not in
entry brackets are shown as reversed, such as ESCAPE . All key references are
in capital letters for clarity.
Action steps - Some procedures may require selection from a menu of options,
inputting data or following a sequence of steps. Most manual sections will first
give an overview of the function or task under discussion and then detail the
various action operating procedures. In order to make this manual easier to use
a symbol, -> , marks the beginning of each of these action operating procedures.
■■■■_MAN programs - The general group of shareware programs by MicroMetric is
referred to by the name ■■■■_MAN. It may also be used in reference to a specific
program in that group.
Shareware distributed documentation manual - The documentation file included on
the shareware distribution diskette contains the same information as the printed
and bound manual, supplied as part of registration, with two exceptions, the
result of the word processor, formatting, and printer used. The first is that
all of the control display characters (ASCII 1-31) and the reverse print key-
board codes are NOT shown properly. Finally, bolding, underlining, and special
symbols are NOT present.
Shareware
DRIV_MAN is being distributed as SHAREWARE. The SHAREWARE concept allows users
to examine a program on a trial basis, at no (or minimal) charge, before pur-
chasing it. In addition, by decreasing marketing costs, professional quality
software may be distributed for a fraction of the cost of a comparable commer-
cial product. Regardless of whether you register the program, please help dis-
tribute DRIV_MAN by sharing unmodified copies of it and its files with others.
You are hereby granted the right to use the DRIV_MAN program for a thirty (30)
day evaluation period. If you find DRIV_MAN of value, and continue to use it
after this evaluation period, YOU MUST REGISTER YOUR PROGRAM USE. This will
provide you with:

INSTALLING THE SYSTEM
Installation on Non-Path Referenced Directories
If the DRIV_MAN files are not located on PATH referenced directories, then, when
executing DRIV_MAN, either:
1. The drive-directory on which they are located must be made the current
one, or
2. The drive-directory on which they are located must be specified on the
command line.
See the chapter "Running DRIV_MAN" for more complete details on operation if the
files are not located on path directories.
From a Diskette Vendor
If the DRIV_MAN program has been obtained from a diskette vendor, you should
follow any of their instruction on unpacking/installing the programs (if indeed
they have separate instructions.) The program, and its files, can be supplied as
a self extracting file whose name is "DMANvvv.EXE" (vvv is the version, such as
"DMAN100").
This file should first be copied to a directory on your hard disk. This direc-
tory may be a new one, such as one named "DRIV", and created specifically for
DRIV_MAN, or a current one, such as "UTILITY", that has other programs/files.
For information on creating a separate directory, see your DOS manual.
Once the file is copied to the desired hard disk directory, at the DOS prompt
change to this drive directory, and then type the EXE file name (such as
"DMAN100") and press ENTER . This will unpack all of the DRIV_MAN files.
From a BBS
If the DRIV_MAN file was downloaded from a Bulletin Board, it should first be
copied to a directory as defined above, and then unpacked, using whatever pro-
gram is specified by the Bulletin Board. It is normally distributed with a name
of "DMANvvv.ZIP" (vvv is the version) or "DMANvv.ZIP" and requires the program
PKUNZIP, version 2, to unpack the files.
Registered Version
Registered users should use the program "INSTALL", that is supplied upon regis-
tration. This program will create a registration file which will, in turn, sup-
press the shareware registration reminders. If the system is already installed,
and only "BRANDING" the system with the registration information is desired, you
can run the program "DRIV_MAN", and when exiting, select the "BRAND" option by
pressing F4 .
-> To install DRIV_MAN on your hard disk, or to upgrade to a new release, follow
the steps detailed below:
1. Place the DRIV_MAN distribution diskette in your floppy diskette drive.
5
INSTALLING THE SYSTEM DRIV_MAN Version 1.3
2. At the DOS prompt, change to the drive in which the distribution diskette is
located. For example, if the diskette was placed in drive A, type A : and
press ENTER .
3. Type I N S T A L L and press ENTER . The installation program
will then be loaded, and its display should be as shown below.

RUNNING DRIV_MAN
Command Line Parameters
The syntax for running DRIV_MAN is:
[drive:path]DRIV_MAN [[first_drive][-][last_drive]][/a][/c][/gxxx][/m]
where:
first_drive default = C
last_drive default = LASTDRIVE as defined in DOS
CONFIG.SYS
/a = Automatic execution of DRIV_MAN and storage of the display. This
method is designed for use in batch files, such as a batch file that
runs once a day.
/c = Force CGA monitor.
/gxxx = Optional configuration file extension (default is CFG). USE OF
THE CONFIGURATION FILE IS LIMITED TO REGISTERED USERS ONLY.
Example: /gcg2 will use "DRIV_MAN.CG2".
/m = Force monochrome monitor.
NOTE Command line parameters may be in either lower or UPPER case.
Spaces between the program name and each of the parameter(s) are
optional.
NOTE To run DRIV_MAN under Windows and use a Microsoft compatible
mouse, load the DOS mouse driver BEFORE loading Windows.

The DRIVE DATA GRAPH is scaled to the largest logical drive selected/available.
Each logical drive's data is displayed in a single column, from A-Z.
The drive's CAPACITY is denoted by the display of two drive letters. The lower
bar depicts the portion of the drive currently utilized and the upper bar is for
that amount which is free. On color monitors, the utilized and free bars are
displayed in different colors.
The example above shows Drive C has a CAPACITY between 27 and 34 Megabytes(Mb)
and a UTILIZATION between 13 and 20 Mb. Drive M has both figures - CAPACITY and
UTILIZATION - between 0 and 6 Mb.
The DRIVE DATA GRAPH vertical axis is normally scaled in capacity (Kb/Mb). The
scale is changed to percentage (%) when the data is sorted in any percentage
order.
By default, the DRIVE DATA SUMMARY and GRAPH are initially displayed in Drive
Letter sort order. The current display order data is highlighted and is also
shown on the bottom help line. There are also five other sort orders that they
may be displayed in. The available display sort orders are:

STORING THE DISPLAY DATA
The DRIV_MAN screen display, of the Disk Summary Data, may be saved to disk to
allow comparisons with previous or future displays.
Using this feature, a snapshot of the current disk status may be saved before
cleaning up a logical drive/drives and then another snapshot saved afterward,
for comparison. Another use is to take Disk Summary snapshots daily, weekly, or

-> To store the current Disk Summary Data screen display, press F3 . The screen
display, except for the bottom help line, will be stored in a file named
"DRIVE_MAN.DAT", and a completion message displayed. If this file already
exists, on the drive-directory on which the program is located, the current
data will be APPENDED to it. If the file does not exist, it will be CREATED
on the same drive-directory as the program.

RUNNING A FILE MANAGER
DRIV_MAN has the capability of "shelling" out to DOS and running another pro-
gram. This is to allow a file manager to be run in conjunction with DRIV_MAN.
FILE_MAN, another shareware program from MicroMetric, is a menu driven file
manager utility. It, or another file manager, may be run directly from DRIV_MAN
to copy, move, delete files or perform other file maintenance functions.
-> To run FILE_MAN, first select the desired drive by pressing it's letter, and
then press ENTER . ( F4 will also trigger this action, to conform with
earlier versions.)
If the file manager program requested is present, DRIV_MAN first changes the
current drive to that displayed in the INDIVIDUAL DRIVE DATA section, and
then loads the file manager. Upon its completion, control is returned to
DRIV_MAN.
If the file manager program requested is not present, a message such as that
shown below is displayed.

NOTE Registered users may change the name of the desired file manager by use
of the configuration file. See the next chapter for detailed informa-
tion.

EXTENDED FILE INFORMATION
The normal drive information is obtained through the DOS software interrupt 21H,
Function 36H, "Get Drive Allocation Information". Additional information may
also be obtained from Function 44H, Subfunction 0DH, Minor Subfunction 60H,
"IOCTL: Generic I/O Control for Block Devices, Get Device Parameters". Only a
limited set of this information can and is presented on the SINGLE SCREEN infor-
mation. However, all of the data can be displayed, one drive at a time, if de-
sired.
-> To display EXTENDED FILE INFORMATION for all displayed drives, press F10 .
EXTENDED FILE INFORMATION for the first drive will be shown, as seen below.
The first six pieces of data are obtained with the "Get Drive Allocation"
interrupt.
NOTE For Novell networks, a problem exists in that drives may be format-
ted with more than 65,536 clusters/drive. To date, we have not been
able to find a DOS function that will determine the correct number
of clusters per drive. Therefore, for these drives, the reported
capacity will be incorrect. This problem does not occur with drives
partitioned with the DOS program FDISK.
The last two, denoted by stars, '*', are from the "IOCTL" interrupt.
NOTE The starred Sectors/drive and the calculated Capacity normally in-
clude disk space not available and marked as "bad sectors".
Drive block devices that are non-disk, such as "RAM DRIVES", are
so marked.
Network drives, that are not accessible by the "IOCTL" interrupt,
are also so marked.

USING A CONFIGURATION FILE
NOTE USE OF THE CONFIGURATION FILE IS LIMITED TO REGISTERED USERS.
The optional DRIV_MAN configuration file contains all of the display color and
position variables. These variables are initially set to the program defaults.
They may be edited by use of any ASCII editor/word processor.
All DRIV_MAN CONFIGURATION FILES are ASCII files and have the name "DRIV_MAN".
The default CONFIGURATION FILE has an extension of ".CFG". It may be edited by
any word processor, using the word processor's option for editing and saving
unformatted files.
Additional CONFIGURATION files may be created and used by DRIV_MAN. For the
procedure of using a CONFIGURATION FILE with an extension other than ".CFG",
see the chapter "RUNNING DRIV_MAN".
-> To change a default value in the CONFIGURATION FILE, edit the parameter as
desired. Any ASCII character may be used in a parameter string EXCEPT for
carriage return (13). All characters are entered using their ASCII codes.
(Hold the ALTERNATE key down and enter the ASCII code using the numeric
keypad only.) To comment out a parameter, add a '*' at the beginning of its
line.
NOTE The format of the DRIV_MAN parameters is:
[parameter #]:{description}{max. length}=[value]
Care should be taken in relocating the various display sections. There are three
types of location changes that can be made:
1. INDIVIDUAL DRIVE DATA on the top of the display, rather than on the bot-
tom.
2. DRIVE DATA GRAPH on the right of the display, rather than on the left.
3. DRIVE DATA SUMMARY, TOTAL DISK SUMMARY, and TOTAL DISK GRAPH may be rear-
ranged within their display space.
